Green FDI: The definition and importance

Recently, foreign direct investment (FDI) has increasingly become a key motivation for economic development. However, its process has caused many negative environmental impacts.

Therefore, governments have encouraged an investment wave towards Green FDI (GFDI) projects.

GFDI occurs when foreign investors bring clean technologies, activities, projects and capital into a recipient country. This type of investment aims to support development and address issues such as pollution, climate change, and resource depletion.

By applying sustainable technologies and practices, foreign investors can improve efficiency and support the transition to a lower-carbon market. GFDI may include investments in energy projects, energy-efficient infrastructure, waste management systems and sustainable agricultural practices.

In recent years, GFDI has gained attention due to the need to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

Overview of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

At the 2015 United Nations Summit, global leaders committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals, set to be achieved within 15 years of implementation, build upon the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to intensify efforts to eliminate all forms of poverty, combat inequalities, and address climate change.

These goals are a global call to action for all nations to foster economic growth, address social needs and work toward ending poverty, protecting the planet and promoting peace as welll as prosperity.

To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, FDI also plays an essential role in promoting the achievement. It has the greatest impact on goal 8 “Decent work and economic growth” and goal 9 “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”.

Moreover, the positive effects of FDI are evident across all 17 goals. By fostering growth and innovation, FDI creates quality jobs and enhances human capital, which can help eliminate gender inequality. Additionally, improving human capital reduces poverty, hunger, while also boosting the health and well-being of citizens.

Importance of Green FDI

Green FDI plays an important role for economies, including:

  • Green FDI stimulates economic growth by investing in sustainable sectors, creating added value and attracting additional resources.
  • GFDI generate numerous job opportunities, particularly in fields such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and clean technology.
  • Green FDI often involves training and skill development for workers.
  • Contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions and the protection of natural resources.
  • Green FDI also encourages international collaboration to address global challenges such as climate change.

In conclusion, Green Foreign Direct Investment (GFDI) is crucial for promoting economic growth while addressing pressing environmental challenges. By attracting GFDI, countries can enhance their resilience to climate change and foster a more equitable and prosperous future.
